Personal History

History and Immigration;
I was born in Kosice, Slovakia. My mom was born in Poprad, Slovakia, and my dad was born in Kosice, Slovakia, but his parents were from Hungary. My grandma had a cousin in New York, and she got a Work Visa and moved to New York a short while after I was born. When I was four, I visited her in America, and since she and my grandpa speak Hungarian, I was able to speak Hungarian fluently when I came back to Slovakia a few months later, as well as Slovak. A year later, when I was five, my grandma sent for us to come to America, and we lived in her apartment for about a year, then found our own apartment a floor above hers in the same building in Astoria, Queens. We've lived there ever since.

Languages;
Unfortunately, when I came back from America after my first vacation, I forgot Hungarian since I only spoke Slovak with my family, even though my dad speaks it fluently. At this point, I speak English and Slovak. The prominent language of Slovakia is Slovak because Czech Republic and Slovakia used to be one country - Czechoslovakia.

When they split on January 1, 1993, Slovakia adopted the language and changed it a bit, so Czech and Slovak are very similar, but do have differences. (For example, "I love you" in Slovak is "lubim ta," and in Czech it is "miluji te.")

There was no war or conflict that caused the two countries to split: it was a mutual decision largely made by political elites Vladimir Meciar (Slovak) and Vaclav Klaus (Czech), made after communism ended. After they separated, Meciar and Klaus became the Prime Ministers of the newly independent coutries. Pro-split citizens and politicians in Slovakia argued that the split was necessary because Slovakia was often neglected economically; the more important manucfacturing factories were located in Czech Republic, while Slovakia’s economy was based on agriculture and processing of raw materials.

Religion;
My dad is Catholic, and my mom is Protestant (Lutheran), and I was baptized Protestant. I've had my communion I'm going to start confirmation classes in the fall.

The characteristics of my religion are that we believe in God and Jesus, and we don't have to go to confession to be forgiven for our sins like Catholics; we just have to pray.

Flags;

Using Google

Topic One; World War II Participants
When you put just "World War II" in the search bar, you get about 154,000,000 results. To narrow it down, click on 'Advanced Search' and put "World War II" into the 'exact phrase' section instead of the 'all of these words' section. Your results are narrowed down to about 62,900,000.

with all of the words__________participants, nations, countries
with the exact phrase_________World War II
with at least one of the words
__participants, nations, countries
without the words
___________weapons

You end up with only about 1 million results, rather than 154 million, making it easier for you to find the website that you're looking for.

Topic Two; 9/11
If you enter "September 11, 2001" into the google search bar, you get 334,000,000 results. To narrow it down,
click on 'Advanced Search' and put "September 11, 2001" into the 'exact phrase' section instead of the 'all of these words' section. Your results are narrowed down to about 1,970,000.

with all of the words__________hijack, planes, twin towers
with the exact phrase_________September 11, 2001
with at least one of the words
__hijack, planes, twin towers
without the words
___________conspiracy, government, theory

After this, you only end up with about 154 results.

Searching the Web

Topic One: Participants of World War II
A good site I found on the countries who participated in WWII www.answers.com. It told me that the Axis Powers were a group of countries led by Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and the Empire of Japan, and that the Allies, led by the United Kingdom, after its defeat, by France, were joined by the Soviet Union and the United States.
A site that I don't like is www.fdrlibrary.marist.edu, because it states the names of people who participated in WWII rather than the countries.

Topic Two: The 1920s [The Roaring Twenties]
A good website I found on the 1920s was www.kyrene.org. I like it because it is accurate and organized. It tells the inventions, fads, and events of the 1920s. A site that I don't like is www.digitalhistory.uh.edu. It doesn't have much information on it about the 1920s and only gives short summaries of a few of the many significant events of the jazz age.

Peer Review of I Am

My blog review is on Kevin Powers. His "I am" blog is great because it is informative, easy to read (well spaced out and good colors), and well written. After reading it I know stuff about him like his birthday, the fact that he likes football and basketball, his nationality, which is African-American and Puerto Rican, etc.

I am...

My name is Evita and I'm 13 years old and turning 14 on September 17th. I live in Astoria, Queens, but I was born in Slovakia and moved here when I was about six years old. (My heritage is mostly Slovak and Hungarian.)

The middle school I came from is Horace Greeley (I.S.10). I wish I didn't have to leave that school, or at least the people there. I've met the greatest people and made the most amazing friends, and I miss them all like crazy. But we'll definitely keep in touch! :D

Magic, conspiracy theories, and unsolved mysteries really interest me; I love to watch detective shows. Even though I mostly just stay inside on my computer, my hobbies include gymnastics, swimming, HTML/CSS, going online, making graphics on Adobe Photoshop, and listening to music - mostly rock - my favorite band is Tokio Hotel, they're from Germany and sing in German. I also like listening to German hip-hop, like Samy Deluxe and Bushido.

My pet peeve is when people watch what I'm reading or doing on the computer from over my shoulders. Even though I never read or do anything bad, I just hate it. I have a very short temper and I hate repeating myself, but I get over it quickly if you get me mad. I can take a joke and laugh at myself, and I actually dislike people that can't. I love funny people who aren't afraid to be themselves, who aren't afraid to go into Starbucks and ask the kiosk to write their name on their cup or get on one of those little rides on Steinway that are meant for 5 year olds and make their friends pay for them to ride it.
